Overall Comparison A2 Hosting vs SiteGround

A few years ago, if you had asked me to choose between A2 Hosting and SiteGround, I would have picked SiteGround without hesitation. But the past doesn’t matter—what matters is how these hosts perform today, and after running some recent tests, I found some surprising results.

SiteGround isn’t as impressive as it once was, especially when compared to a budget-friendly, high-performance provider like A2 Hosting. That’s not to say SiteGround doesn’t have its merits—it’s still incredibly easy to use. However, in terms of performance, it simply doesn’t measure up anymore.

To provide a thorough comparison, my colleagues and I tested both hosts over several months. I’ll be straightforward: A2 Hosting is significantly faster than SiteGround and comes at a lower price. On the flip side, SiteGround does offer superior customer support and user-friendly features.

1. Plans and Pricing

A2 Hosting Is More Affordable Than SiteGround, Especially Over Time

If you’re looking for budget-friendly shared hosting, A2 Hosting can help you save significantly. Its shared hosting plans are roughly half the price of SiteGround’s comparable plans, and the cost difference becomes even greater upon renewal.

For example, A2 Hosting’s entry-level Startup plan offers one website, 100GB of storage, and unlimited bandwidth. In contrast, SiteGround’s Startup plan is twice as expensive, with only 10GB of storage and bandwidth limited to about 10,000 monthly visitors.

To be fair, SiteGround’s plans come with managed WordPress services, unlike A2. With SiteGround, you get a one-click installer, a WordPress setup wizard, automatic updates and backups, and specialized support. While A2’s entry-level plan doesn’t include all these features, it does offer a one-click WordPress installer, and you can handle updates and backups on your own with ease.

Plan TypeA2 HostingSiteGround
Shared HostingStarts at $2.99/monthStarts at $3.99/month
VPS Hosting Starts at $4.99/month Starts at $12.99/month
Dedicated HostingStarts at $99.99/monthStarts at $269/month
Managed WordPress HostingStarts at $2.99/monthStarts at $3.99/month
Cloud HostingStarts at $5.00/month Starts at $100/month

A2 Hosting offers separate plans for managed WordPress hosting, but these come at a higher price. However, they may be worth considering for more complex WordPress sites, as they run on A2’s top-performing Turbo servers and include a free Jetpack Personal license.

For even more robust hosting, A2’s managed VPS plans and SiteGround’s managed cloud are both options, but A2 still provides better value. For instance, SiteGround’s Business plan costs twice as much as A2’s Lift 16, yet A2’s plan delivers twice the memory and processing power, along with over seven times the SSD storage.

2. Features

SiteGround May Be Easier to Use, but A2 Hosting Offers Better Features on Its Cheapest Plan

While SiteGround has always excelled in features, its premium plans remain strong in this area. However, the Startup plan is quite basic, putting it at a disadvantage compared to A2’s entry-level plan.

A2 Hosting not only provides more storage space and bandwidth but also includes the reliable cPanel control panel. Although SiteGround’s proprietary Site Tools is easier to navigate, it lacks several key features. For instance, with cPanel, you can clone websites and create staging environments to test changes, options that Site Tools doesn’t offer unless you’re on a premium plan.

Additionally, cPanel comes with a one-click installer for hundreds of content management systems (CMSs). A2 Hosting has even added custom installations to help you quickly set up WordPress and other popular CMSs with performance and security plugins pre-installed.

SiteGround’s App Manager, the equivalent one-click installer, supports only 18 CMSs, including popular choices like WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla. However, if you’re looking to install frameworks like Symfony or Laravel, you’ll have to do it manually.

Even Git, a valuable tool for developers that’s available with almost all cPanel hosts, is disabled on SiteGround’s basic plan.

You can get advanced features like caching, on-demand backups, and collaboration tools on SiteGround’s higher-priced GoGeek plan, but it comes at a steep cost.

One notable point is that while SiteGround offers a standard 30-day money-back guarantee, A2 Hosting goes a step further by allowing you to request a prorated refund anytime during your contract. No other host in the industry offers this level of flexibility.

3. Performance

A2 Hosting Is Significantly Faster Than SiteGround

Both A2 Hosting and SiteGround provide SSD storage with all their plans, which is a notable advantage. Additionally, both hosts offer the option to select from multiple data center locations to help optimize site loading speeds for your audience. A2 Hosting has servers in the US, the Netherlands, and Singapore, while SiteGround includes these locations along with the UK, Germany, and Australia.

When it comes to web server technology, SiteGround uses Nginx across all plans and includes several caching plugins on their premium plans. In contrast, A2 Hosting relies on the traditional Apache server for its two basic plans and switches to LiteSpeed for the Turbo Boost and Turbo Max plans.

Given that Nginx is generally faster and more reliable than Apache, one might expect SiteGround to outperform A2 Hosting—I certainly did, especially considering that SiteGround recently transitioned to Google Cloud Platform, known for its speed.

However, I was surprised by the results. Testing A2 Hosting with GTmetrix, I found an impressive average load time of 1.3 seconds. The fastest recorded time was 1.1 seconds, while the slowest was a still respectable 1.6 seconds. This performance definitely exceeded my expectations.

I still had high hopes for SiteGround, so you can imagine my disappointment when it delivered an average loading time of only 2.02 seconds. The slowest speed recorded was 2.5 seconds, and even the fastest time was a modest 1.4 seconds.

SiteGround’s performance improved slightly with the Sucuri Load Time Tester, which gives a clearer view of its global performance. Despite this, I only received a disappointing B rating for overall performance. For more details on SiteGround’s performance tests, check out our full SiteGround review.

4. Ease of Use

The key distinction between A2 Hosting and SiteGround lies in how they handle hosting management. A2 Hosting uses a traditional setup, offering users WHMCS along with the standard cPanel. In contrast, SiteGround has developed its own custom, more user-friendly and modern solution called Site Tools.

With A2 Hosting, if you’ve previously used any hosting service, the experience is straightforward. You navigate to cPanel, where you can easily manage app installations (like WordPress), domains, databases, and files, all within a familiar interface.

A2 Hosting Dashboard

It’s quick and easy to get accustomed to, with everything accessible in just a few clicks. For a closer look at how simple it is to launch a website, check out our full A2 Hosting review.

On the other hand, SiteGround’s interface is more sophisticated. It starts with the main user dashboard, where you can manage both billing and account details as well as your websites. From here, you can install WordPress or remove any of your existing sites.

SiteGrond website details

Getting familiar with SiteGround may take a bit more time, but overall, it’s quite intuitive. We discuss this further in our SiteGround review. Additionally, each tool comes with built-in explanations and guides to help you along the way.

In short, A2 Hosting offers a standard setup, while SiteGround’s control panel is designed to be more functional. The better option depends on your preferences, so there’s no clear winner here.

5. Support

Both Hosts Are Difficult to Reach, but SiteGround Offers Better Assistance

Both SiteGround and A2 Hosting provide 24/7 customer support. SiteGround offers 24/7 live chat, phone, and email/ticket support, while A2 Hosting provides 24/7 live chat and ticket support, with phone support available but not around the clock. The issue with both hosts is that it can be difficult to actually connect with an agent.

For example, with SiteGround, you have to navigate a complicated help center and answer several frustrating questions before you even get access to live chat. This system seems designed to discourage users from reaching out, which, frankly, isn’t very customer-friendly, SiteGround.

That being said, once I finally reached a SiteGround support agent, my experience was quite positive. I received detailed answers to most of my questions, and the agent even offered to install WordPress and an SSL certificate for me—definitely a nice touch. They made such a good impression that I nearly forgot it took almost an hour to get a response.

SiteGround Agent

On the other hand, my experience with A2 Hosting wasn’t as smooth. I had hoped the “Guru Crew” would respond more quickly, but although the live chat was easier to access, the agents were not. At one point, I had to wait nearly two hours just to get a reply.

Unfortunately, things got even worse. When I finally received a response from one of A2’s support agents, it became clear that I wasn’t going to get any helpful information. The conversation was at best unclear because I felt like I knew more about A2 Hosting’s platform than the agent did most of the time.

A2 Hosting Chat Support

I received clear responses through the ticket system, but I didn’t get any “expert advice.” The information was quite basic—something I could have easily found on Google. If you prefer to tackle issues on your own, you’ll probably want to skip live chat entirely, as both SiteGround and A2 Hosting offer extensive knowledge bases filled with detailed guides.

A2 Hosting

24/7 Availability: Offers 24/7 support via live chat, phone, and email.

Guru Crew Support: Known for technical expertise, especially for advanced users and developers.

Response Time: Generally quick, with many users reporting fast and effective resolutions.

Knowledge Base: Extensive tutorials and guides available for self-help.

SiteGround:

24/7 Availability: Provides 24/7 support via live chat, phone, and ticketing system.

Highly Rated Support: Frequently praised for friendly, knowledgeable, and fast support.

Quick Response: Consistently delivers fast response times and efficient problem-solving.

Help Center: Comprehensive help center with guides, tutorials, and video resources.

6. Security

A2 Hosting Offers Free Security Tools, While SiteGround Charges Extra

SiteGround offers a solid variety of security features across all its plans. These include a web application firewall (WAF), its own AI-powered anti-bot system (which protects against threats like DDoS and Brute-Force attacks), 24/7 server monitoring, and access to the Sucuri-developed SG Scanner for malware protection.

In contrast, GoDaddy’s primary security features are more limited, focusing mainly on 24/7 server monitoring and DDoS protection.

Both hosts use systems to isolate accounts on shared servers for enhanced security. GoDaddy uses CloudLinux OS for its Linux-based shared hosting, while SiteGround employs a similar system called Unique Account Isolation. These systems keep accounts separated from one another on the same server, preventing issues from spreading between accounts and ensuring resources are distributed fairly.

SiteGround provides free SSL certificates with all its plans, while GoDaddy only includes them with certain higher-tier shared and server plans. Additionally, SiteGround offers free daily automatic backups on all its plans, whereas GoDaddy limits this feature to specific plans.

Overall, SiteGround is the clear winner, offering a far more comprehensive range of security features than GoDaddy.
